![]() | Leadership in Kindergarten A series to explore developing connections with healthy leadership. |
![]() | Welcome |
![]() | As the kindergarten students arrive for the day I find that a genuine "Good Morning", "Nice to see you!" is a simple way to role model building personal connections by acknowledging and welcoming each child. |
![]() | Being met with an unconditional "Welcome" can contribute to a student's developing sense of belonging within their school community. |
![]() | That daily first interaction, with no strings attached, no judgements nor corrections, benefits not only the students but also myself as an educator. |
![]() | If I were to invest my energy in a Culture of Correction I would be exhausted trying to follow a self-imposed "Wrong O'clock" schedule. |
![]() | If I began each day with greetings such as "Hey! You ARE going to make Better Choices today, right!?" or "You dressed yourself? Yeah, Silly, your shirt is backwards!" "Whoa! Slow down! Walking Feet!" "Ugh! Hurry up, Stop Dawdling!" |
![]() | Not only will the students feel unwelcome but I would be spiralling towards a micro-managing toxic leadership style. |
![]() | Can you imagine walking into work every morning and feeling your admin team's eyes on you? Wondering if they are looking for something to correct? |
![]() | You would know that uncomfortable feeling of being judged for any choice you make. |
![]() | Even if done with the best of intentions of "I have to be honest!" or "Just trying to help!" I believe it is a harmful leadershp style. |
![]() | Fault focused leadership Divides a community. |
![]() | As a kindergarten leader I want to role model a leadership style that connects community members. |
![]() | I want students to come through the door knowing I believe they are competent and capable. |
![]() | So, I begin with a greeting: "Welcome, I am looking forward to today!" |
