Dolls fly through the air!

Towers of picture books crash to the floor!

Pockets stuffed and overflowing with sand!

Your first thought might be:

They aren’t playing with the toys correctly!

So, you let them know:

“Dolls stay down!”

“Books are for reading!”

“Sand stays in the box!”

You are not wrong.

It is not safe to throw dolls.

Books will get damaged.

You may run out of sand.

But … there is more to it than that.

You may feel like you are having an OMG moment

You are at the start of an O.I.C. moment.

Observe

What actions are you seeing at this moment?

Throwing? Building? Carrying?

Infer

Use your knowledge of the

Continuum of Development

and

Childhood Schemas

to see behind the chaotic outcomes

and look for the

Developmental Needs

being explored

at this moment.

Connect

Facilitate the connection from Need to Action.

Literally!

Using positive and supportive language transition the child from the current action towards the materials and space

they need to safely explore their developing skills.

The next time you see something that may seem

wrong

you can say

Oh, I See

what is happening at this moment and I know how to support it safely.

Oh, I see the dolls flying through the air. It is fun to explore how things move. Let's find something we can toss that won't break and a place to do it where we won't hit anyone.

Oh, I see the tower of books fell over. It is fun to explore how objects connect then separate. Let's find something we can build with that won't rip and a place to do it where it won't fall on someone.

Oh, I see the sand in your pockets. It is fun to explore hiding things or moving them to new places. Let's find some containers that can stay in the sandbox and lets find some other things that might fit in your pockets without spilling onto the floor.

If your thoughts think OMG

Let your words say OIC
