The Road to Reason 1

🔴 Regulate

~ Before a child can take the wheel to navigate the road to Reason they need you.

~ In the beginning you are both the driver and the navigator.

~ The child is experiencing the big emotion. Your role is to support them and guide them as they process that big emotion.

🟡 Relate

~ As the experienced driver you can relate to their emotion.

~ You have been down this road before.

~ You are there to assure them they are being heard, their emotion is understood, you are there to help.

🟢 Reason

~ The road ahead is clear.

~ The child is feeling calm, they trust you, you are ready for Reason.

~ You discuss the options and wait.

~ If this is one of the child's first visits to Reason that big emotion may come back again and you will need to calmly drive through Regulate and Relate again.

~ If the child has been here before, it will start to look familiar. Each time they visit Reason they will be more comfortable making choices.
